Embryo vitrification vs traditional slow-freezing

Embryo vitrification isn’t the only method used to freeze embryos. The traditional preservation technique, known as ‘slow freezing,’ effectively cools the embryos at—you guessed it—a slower pace. Here’s how slow freezing works:

  1. The dehydration stage: Similar to embryo vitrification, the slow freezing method also dehydrates embryos using cryoprotectants. However, the concentration of cryoprotectants is lower, meaning the process takes longer. 
  2. The storage stage: The embryos are also placed in straws. These straws are larger than those used for embryo vitrification and hold about 100-200 times more fluid. After all, more fluid means more freezing time required. 
  3. The freezing stage: The straws are placed into a machine that slowly decreases the temperature.
